Arturo Sandoval

Filled with a virtuoso capability, he desires nothing more than to share his gift with others who feel the same intense adoration for music as he does.

One frequently speaks of Arturo Sandoval’s virtuoso technical ability or his specialty in high notes, but he who has seen him on the piano, lyrically improvising a ballad, or has had the opportunity to enjoy the diversity of his music, through his compositions from the most straight ahead jazz, Latin jazz or classical, knows that Arturo Sandoval is a prominent musician, and one recognizes that Arturo is one of the most brilliant, multifaceted and renowned musicians of our time.

Benny Benack III

By age 28, trumpeter and singer Benny Benack III has proven to be a rare talent: not only a fiery trumpet player with a stirring command of the postbop trumpet vernacular in the vein of Kenny Dorham and Blue Mitchell, but also a singer with a sly, mature, naturally expressive delivery in the post-Sinatra mold, performing standards and his own astute songs with a thrilling sense of showmanship.  His superb intonation and bracing virtuosity enable him to handle astounding feats of originally composed vocalese (complex solos with written lyrics). And he’s a highly capable pianist as well.

Benny performs widely as a frontman for Postmodern Jukebox, the vintage music collective famed for canny old-school covers of modern pop.  In early 2020, he released A Lot of Livin’ to Do, the follow-up to his well-received 2017 debut album, One of a Kind.  This sophomore effort, richly varied in mood and brimming with bop inflection, features bassist extraordinaire Christian McBride and drummer/producer Ulysses Owens, Jr., as well as the radiant Takeshi Ohbayashi on piano and Rhodes.

Benny’s been showcased in international headliner tours at Jazz at Lincoln Center Shanghai, JALC’s “NY Jazz All-Stars” (Mexico) and extensively all over Asia and Europe.  He has headlined domestic tours around the U.S. including the Vail Jazz Party, Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival, Pittsburgh JazzLive International, the Vancouver Jazz Festival and the Summer Solstice Jazz Festival in East Lansing, MI, to name a few.  Benny's been featured at Birdland, Mezzrow, Bemelmans Bar at the Carlyle and other leading New York venues.  Alongside his work as a leader, he has played in the house band for NBC’s “Maya & Marty,” and appeared as a trumpet soloist across genres with the Christian McBride Big Band, Diplo/Major Lazer, Ann Hampton Callaway, Melissa Errico, Josh Groban, Ben Folds, fashion icon Isaac Mizrahi and more.

Benny was a 2014 finalist in the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Trumpet Competition, and winner of the 2011 Carmine Caruso International Trumpet Competition.  He is highly sought after as a clinician and educator, leading workshops for Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Jazz for Young People program, as well as the New York Youth Symphony’s Education department.  In 2020 he will lead a panel at the annual Jazz Congress on Audience Engagement, together with Christian McBride, Marilyn Maye and Veronica Swift.

Third in a generational line of Pittsburgh jazz notables, Benny follows in the footsteps of his trumpeter/bandleader grandfather, Benny Benack, Sr. (1921-86), and his father Benny Benack, Jr., a saxophonist/clarinetist who gave the young Benny his first professional experience.  Benny, Sr. hailed from a Pittsburgh lineage that also produced Roy Eldridge, Earl Hines, Art Blakey, Billy Strayhorn and so many more. He recorded the Pittsburgh Pirates’ 1960 theme song “Beat ’Em Bucs” and toured with Tommy Dorsey and Raymond Scott, among others.  Benny III returns to Pittsburgh often to perform, saluting his family forebears and the jazz heritage as a whole, nonetheless staking his bold and highly individual artistic claim.

Benny Benack III endorses P. Mauriat Trumpets, Torpedo Bag Cases, CarolBrass Flugelhorn and X-Suit Menswear.

Theo Hartman

My name is Theo Hartman. I began playing cornet at the age of 9. I studied the trumpet succesfully at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, The Netherlands. Among my teachers were Theo Laanen (Residentie Orchestra, The Hague) and John Taber (Residentie Orchestra, New Zealand Symphony  Orchestra and Orchestre National Bordeaux Aquitaine).

From 1985 till 1990 I played as assistant principal trumpeter with the Haifa Symphony Orchestra in Israel. With the Haifa Brass Quartet I performed also extensively in Israel. After returning to The Netherlands I have been performing with the Radio Symphony Orchestra and many more Dutch orchestras.

In 2006 I initiated my own brass ensemble ‘Continuous Brass’ which is still performing.

In 2015 I have been the initiator to start the ‘Triple Berry Trio’. Recently in autumn 2017 I have created a new unique and exciting duo with classical guitar and trumpet called ‘Duo Beyond Limits’. Shamarr Allen

Music has been a part of Shamarr Allen’s life for as long as he can recall. A musical prodigy, people have forever recognized his extraordinary talents as a musician. Shamarr’s countless career accomplishments, are highlighted by performances with artists Patti LaBelle, Lenny Kravitz, Harry Connick Jr., Branford Marsalis, and a multi-city tour and studio recordings with country legend Will Nelson, Ray Price, Leon Russell, and R.E.M. His personal compositions include music for the New Orleans Saints, “Bring Em To The Dome,” the ecologically conscious oil spill record.

Josh Shpak

“I love connecting with people,” says young trumpeter, Josh Shpak.  “Whether they be teenagers or your grandma, if I can see that they’re feeling the music, I’m happy.”

This breaking of generational gaps has become somewhat of a habit for the 23-year- old Berklee College of Music student.  With such a wide stylistic palette evident of influences from classic jazz to electronica, Shpak has made himself a wanted commodity in the music world.  This cross-generational quality has launched a career playing with jazz heavy-weights, such as George Garzone, Dave Liebman and Jimmy Heath, soul legends Tower of Power, young cross-over innovators like Casey Benjamin, Nir Felder and John Daversa, and pop/opera superstar, Josh Groban, on his Grammy-nominated CD, "STAGES LIVE", and PBS TV Special, "STAGES".

A protégé of jazz icon Clark Terry, Josh Shpak is dually driven by a great respect for the past, and a drive to put his own mark on the future.  “Every great musician in history has been completely present in his or her own time period, while using their knowledge of the tradition to drive their creative forces.”

Josh is currently a member of Boston-based rock/funk/dance-pop band, RIPE, acoustic world-jazz ensemble, THE AFFINITY QUARTET, the MARIO CASTRO QUINTET, and numerous other projects.  He also performs with his own group, the Josh Shpak Band, a cutting-edge modern jazz outfit that incorporates the sounds of rock, electronic, and film music with jazz.  The band’s debut EP, “ASTATIC”, released in late-summer 2015, features artwork by Leigh McCloskey, whose inspired inventiveness has graced the cover of Flying Lotus’ “Cosmogramma” CD and the Rolling Stones’ “Bigger Bang Tour”.  And, in April 2016, the Josh Shpak Band was the featured group at the Monterey Jazz Festival's "Next Generation Jazz Festival.

Among Josh Shpak's numerous awards and accolades are being named the 2017 Downbeat Magazine Undergraduate Jazz Soloist Winner, 2nd Place Winner of the 2015 Carmine Caruso International Jazz Trumpet Competition, 1 of 4 trumpet finalists for the 2012, 2014 and 2016 Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz, being chosen as a recipient of the 2014 ASCAP Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composer Award, being selected as a jazz finalist for the 2014 National Trumpet Competition, named a 2014 Downbeat Magazine Student Award Winner for Small Ensemble Original Composition for his piece, "LET GO", receiving a 2013 Downbeat Undergraduate Outstanding Jazz Trumpet Soloist award, being chosen as a resident of the Kennedy Center’s 2013 Betty Carter Jazz Ahead Program and the 2013 Banff International Workshop in Jazz & Creative Music, being commissioned to compose music for the 2013 French documentary film, “California Dream 3D”, as well as being named the 2012 Yamaha Young Performing Artists jazz trumpeter, and the 2012 National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts “YoungArts” jazz trumpet winner.

Josh plays a Harrelson Summit trumpet, a Yamaha 8310Z Shew trumpet, and a CarolBrass CFL-6200-GSS-SLB flugelhorn.

Nick Javier

Nick Javier is an American jazz trombonist and vocalist who is influenced by a variety of music. His primary musical influences include Mile Davis, J. J. Johnson, Charlie Parker, James Brown, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Curtis Fuller, Thelonious Monk, and his hop culture.

Javier was raised in Mid-Michigan, where he grew up with a close friend whose father was a jazz musician. He was exposed to jazz music in this household through the father's encyclopedic record collection. The area where Javier grew up produced many talented jazz musicians, including Diego Rivera, Carl Cafagna, and Brad Goode.

Nick studied jazz at the Royal Conservatoire in the Netherlands where he was mentored by three great trombonists, Ilja Reingoud, Martin Sohier, and Arthur Moore. While at the Conservatory, Javier gained valuable experience by going to all the jam sessions and performing consistently in The Hague and Amsterdam. Javier was especially enriched by having the opportunity to perform at the North Sea Jazz Festival with Slide Hampton, Kenny Wheeler, Jim McNeely, and Gerald Wilson.

Javier continued his jazz education at Michigan State University, where he finished a Master of Music degree in jazz studies under the mentorship of Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra alumni; Rodney Whitaker, and Wes "Warmdaddy" Anderson. As a teaching assistant, Nick led and wrote arrangement for two octets and taught a jazz piano course. During this time, Nick was a member of several professional ensembles ranging from jazz, funk, soul, Puerto Rican salsa, and Cuban music in Michigan. He was a fixture on the Detroit jazz scene, performing several times at Baker's Keyboard Lounge, and with the Scott Gwinnel Jazz Orchestra.

Bert Lochs

Bert Lochs is regarded as one of the best trumpet players of his generation. A musicians' musician, not well known to the general public, but certainly not unknown among colleagues and gourmets. With undiminished enthusiasm, he always manages to surprise with his lyrical and virtuoso flugelhorn playing and powerful, fierce trumpet sounds. He increasingly moves on the interface between jazz and classical music, with a clear reliance on the impressionistic lyricism of the turn of the century. Pure improvisation mixed with an almost classical melodic and harmonic imagination.

He does not shy away from innovation and experimentation. He has been active at EWI (Electric Wind Instrument) for a number of years, and recently made the switch to the trumpet version: Johan Berglund's NuEvi. He likes to experiment with electronics, and he also likes to pick up the valve trombone. His compositions are miniature stories. Not a piece about anything. Small and big stories are expressed in music.

As a trumpet soloist he was a finalist at the Middelsee Jazztreffen, at the Wessel Ilckenprijs, Leverkusener Jazztage, European Contest for Young Jazz Talent in Rome, Hoeilaart Jazz, and as a composer his piece 'One for Me ' played.

He played at several major festivals: Montreux, Leverkusen, North Sea Jazz, European Jazz Night in Oslo, and on many stages throughout Europe, including the BIM-huis, Victoria Oslo, Jazzschmiede Düsseldorf, Satchmo in Maribor, A-trane in Berlin .
A temporary highlight was the invitation of the legendary jazz pianist Enrico Pieranunzi to play with his quintet at the jazz festival in Bremen.

With his own band Braskiri, together with pianist Dirk Balthaus, drummer Wim Kegel and Norwegian tuba player Steffen Granly, he is making good progress. The first CD 'Killing the Mozzarella' received rave reviews and resulted in a performance at North Sea Jazz 2016. In 2018 the second studio CD 'The Couch Principle' was released, and shortly after that Braskiri was asked to make a one mike recording in the legendary studio 2 of the Muziek Centrum van de Omroep. To this end, Lochs wrote a completely new repertoire in a short time, and in March 2020 the online album 'Live at MCO' was launched.

Bert studied trumpet at the Hilversum Conservatory and composition at the Rotterdam Conservatory. He was taught by Ack van Rooijen, Bob Brookmeijer, Rob Pronk, Rob Madna, Charli Green and Willem van der Vliet, among others.

Saskia Laroo

In the 20th century, the state of the art of the trumpet has been formed in lion’s shares by the achievements of jazz musicians. The concept of playing the trumpet was pushed up to a higher level than ever thought possible. Louis Armstrong, Bix Beiderbecke, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis and Don Cherry are but a few of the many trumpet players who have. They are male. Valaida Snow, Clora Bryant, Barbara Donald, Ingrid Jensen and Saskia Laroo form a short but important roster of female trumpet players who, despite the rarity of women in the field of jazz trumpet, will leave a distinct mark. Saskia Laroo, is a current feature on the face of 21st century trumpet artistry.

HER BEGINNINGS
Saskia Laroo, coined in America by press and public as ‘Lady Miles Davis of Europe’ has been going strong for over three decades. Born in 1959 in Amsterdam, she grew up in Den Ilp and went to high school in Zaandam. Her first playing experiences at age 8 were at Het Brass Band of Fanfare de Eendracht in her then hometown Den Ilp. At 18 she attended the University of Amsterdam to study mathematics, albeit briefly, soon swayed by the challenge of a professional career in music. She studied trumpet with some of the best known artist / teachers of the day: at the Muziekpedagogische Academie of Alkmaar, the Sweelinck Conservatorium (with Boy Raaymakers) in Amsterdam and the Muziekpedagogische Academie of Hilversum (with Ack van Rooyen). However promising it sounds in retrospect, Saskia’s was not a smooth beginning. It was difficult for her to get her foot in the door: “A problem with getting gigs was that nobody wanted to play with somebody as unknown as me. The trumpet player is naturally the most important person in a band. He plays the “lead” and gives all “cues” for the other musicians. Often the rejection sounded as follows: you can’t play a whole concert, you will get tired halfway because you aren’t strong enough,” according to Saskia. So, for a short time, she choose bass over trumpet as there were more requests for bass players for many gigs. “After starting to gig on bass, they put more faith in me and even began to accept me as a trumpeter as well.” By this period, Saskia had already begun booking herself.

SASKIA TAKES SHAPE
By 1979 Saskia is a full-fledged professional, performing with dixieland bands and mainstream jazz combos. It was during this period that she had the privilege of frequently being called for work by Dutch tenor saxophonist Hans Dulfer.

By 1981 Saskia became a regular in his bands and also Rosa King’s Upside-Down Band, which included in the line-up a young sax prodigy named Candy Dulfer. While in the formative years of her career, she’d also garnered much experience absorbing world music, namely, of Hispanic, Caribbean, Brazilian and African roots. building on these influences, Saskia continued to expand her horizons.
In 1982 she formed her own Salsa Caliente Band; between 1986 and 1990 she led Caribbean Express; from 1990 till 1994 she performed with The Caribbean Colours. Around 1994 Saskia felt she had found her own voice. While having gone solo for the first time in 1993, the following year this grew into the Saskia Laroo Band, featuring compositions from her debut CD “It’s Like Jazz”. In 1995, Laroo gave birth to two new groups: Salsa Bop - a Latin jazz quintet and Jazzkia - her straight-ahead jazz unit. Presently, besides barnstorming with her own of several groups, Saskia Laroo often appears as a special guest artist.

THE SHAPE OF SASKIA’S SOUND: THE MUSICAL CONCEPT

Music over the past one hundred years has become a rich, colourful potluck in the banquet of the many, and musicians worldwide have flourished as its caterers. Jazz itself is such a kitchen, born of a plasma of creativity in peril, reared as a hunger to enthrall “the party people”, and matured as food for the whole person in an uncertain existence. Saskia Laroo makes her way by cooking up new styles which blend bebop jazz, club, hip-hop, rap, world, and whatever else grooves, in a driving party mix. Her sound is often described as “nu jazz”; she herself has coined her sound as “body music”. Her sound is borne of her broad musical palette. It’s power may be in her down-to-earth perspective; “I want people to have a good time, to dance when I play. I don’t just play for other musicians”.
Laroo makes this magic with her favourite of her several units, the Saskia Laroo Band. Its members are often an international bunch who hail from other lands, are well-versed in many styles, and open to new sounds. Thus, her joy comes to life with this group: some tradition, lots of hipness, groove, ba-ad solos, bold rap vocals, and her mellifluous trumpet leading the way. With all, she freely cooks up the jam.

Yet, like many eclectic artists before her, there are challenges to mass acceptance innate to mixing jazz and more popular styles. Laroo loves the freedom to jump from jazz to groove and back... and back again. Though this predilection has been clear from her first release, “It’s Like Jazz”, some of her more purist jazz pals chide her for “flirting too much with pop...”. Pop fans dig the pop elements but still see Saskia as a jazz artist. Ironically, the music critics’ opinions seem to differ little from the fans. Saskia’s first concern is with reaching everybody, the audience as well as the critics. Her math ultimately weighs having a solid fan base over critical acclaim, “I think the reason why it’s all going okay is because I play for the fun of all, including mine.”

SOME OTHER TIDBITS...
Multifaceted, Saskia has not only her celebrated penchant for eclecticism, her mathematics, or her hot looks, but also her multi-instrumentalism. Aforementioned is her skills as a bassist, having studied its classical technique for some time prior to playing jazz gigs on the instrument in her early career. She also includes bass guitar as part of the artillery. Even earlier, during 1966-1971, she studied alto and soprano recorder, from 1967 studied and played cornet (pocket trumpet) in the Fanfare de Eendracht of Den Ilp. Soon she’d study cello from 1971-1974 and added on a year of guitar lessons. At the age of 27, Saskia began to sing and study the alto saxophone. She then tacked on a knowledge of piano and organ. She currently specializes on trumpet.

The Morgana model Bb Trumpet

The "Morgana" trumpet model was designed with NYC trumpet artist, Carol Morgan with consultation from Carol Brass Dealer, Lou Gagliardi at HighScream Brass of Houston, Texas. Carol's objective was to design a modern, state of the art trumpet with characteristics similar to her vintage 1940s New York Bach.

The Morgana model provides a wide pallet for colors and nuance at all dynamic levels. The red-brass, slow-tapered leadpipe provides a warm baseline tonal color that responds with harmonic resonance at increasing dynamic levels. The reversed, D-style tuning slide (standard) is often the choice for both jazz and classical players as it further increases the harmonic coloring.   The bell is standard weight (.024"), slow taper (#37) and 123mm (4 7/8") to provide a sweet compact core. The Morgana model is designed to provide impeccable intonation and a wide range of expression with maximum playing efficiency and it is finished in copper plate and lacquer.
